2. Improper Ejection — The #1 Removable Drive Killer
Pulling out a removable drive without "Safely Remove Hardware" is the single most common cause of removable drive data loss. Windows uses write caching for performance — data isn't always written to the drive immediately. "Safely Remove" flushes the write cache, ensuring all pending writes complete. Yanking the drive mid-cache = incomplete writes = corrupted file system = RAW drive. Microsoft's file caching documentation explains this in detail.
Quick Fix: Windows Settings → Device Manager → Disk drives → your removable drive → Policies → select "Quick removal" (disables write caching). This makes the drive slower but eliminates the improper ejection risk. External drive not recognized guide.
