How to Recover Data from a Lost or Deleted Partition: Partition Recovery

Partition loss is terrifying because it looks like total data annihilation — but it's actually one of the most recoverable scenarios. Immediate First-Aid

Critical — Do NOT make it worse.

  1. Do NOT create a new partition on the unallocated space. Creating a new partition writes a new file system structure that overwrites the old one — destroying recoverable data.
  2. Do NOT format the unallocated area. Ever.
  3. Do NOT use "New Simple Volume" in Disk Management on the unallocated space.
  4. Stop using the disk immediately. Do not save files to other partitions on the same physical disk if possible.

1 Check Disk Management — Missing Drive Letter ~1 Min

Sometimes the partition isn't actually lost — it just lost its drive letter. This is the simplest fix.

  1. Right-click Start → Disk Management.
  2. Look for a partition without a drive letter but with a recognized file system (NTFS, FAT32).
  3. Right-click it → "Change Drive Letter and Paths" → Add → assign a drive letter.
  4. Partition reappears in File Explorer with all files intact. Identify your device type for specific instructions.

2 TestDisk — Recover the Partition Table Free & Open Source

TestDisk is the gold standard for partition recovery. It scans the disk for remnants of the old partition structure and can rewrite the partition table — making all files immediately accessible without scanning.

  1. Download TestDisk (free, open source). Extract and run as Administrator.
  2. Select the disk with lost partitions → choose partition table type (Intel for MBR, EFI GPT for modern systems).
  3. Select "Analyze""Quick Search." TestDisk scans for partition signatures.
  4. When TestDisk finds your lost partition, press "P" to preview files inside — verify it's the right partition.
  5. Press "Write" to save the recovered partition table. Restart. Your partition returns.

Special Scenarios

Multiple Lost Partitions

If ALL partitions are lost (disk shows entirely unallocated), the MBR or GPT header is damaged. TestDisk's "Deeper Search" can find all partitions.
