Video recovery is the most technically challenging file recovery category. Unlike documents (kilobytes) or photos (megabytes), video files routinely exceed multiple gigabytes. A single 4K drone clip can be 5-20 GB. A feature-length project can be 500 GB+. These enormous file sizes mean video files are almost always fragmented — stored in non-contiguous clusters scattered across the drive. 1. Container vs Codec — Why Video Recovery Is Complex

Every video file has two layers: the container (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV — defines the file structure, timing, metadata) and the codec (H.264, H.265, ProRes — the actual compressed video data). ISO/IEC 14496-12 (MP4 file format) and Apple's QuickTime File Format specification define how MP4 and MOV containers work. When video recovery fails, it's almost always because the container index is damaged or fragmented — the actual video data (codec bytes) is intact, but the player can't find it.

2. Fragmentation — The #1 Video Recovery Problem

Video fragmentation is fundamentally different from photo or document fragmentation. A 4K video might span thousands of non-contiguous clusters. When the file system is healthy, it tracks all fragments via the MFT (NTFS) or FAT chain. When the file system is damaged (deletion, formatting, corruption), recovery software must guess the correct fragment order.

Why Videos Fragment So Severely:

  • Constant writes: Cameras and screen recorders write video data continuously. The file grows in real-time, and the OS allocates whatever free space is available — which is rarely contiguous.
  • Interleaved audio/video: Video and audio data are interleaved in the file. A 1-second segment has video bytes, then audio bytes, then video, then audio — repeated. If fragments are incorrectly ordered, you get video without audio, or silent sections with glitchy video.

4. MOOV Atom — The Critical MP4/MOV Index

The MOOV atom (movie header) is the single most important structure in MP4 and MOV files. It contains every sample's location, size, and timestamp — the "table of contents" for the entire video. Apple documents the MOOV atom structure.

Problem: Many cameras and phones write the MOOV atom at the end of the file — after all the video data has been recorded. If the recording is interrupted (battery dies, crash, improper stop), the MOOV atom was never written. The file exists but is unplayable.

5. GoPro Chaptered Footage Recovery

GoPro cameras split long recordings into chapters — individual MP4 files of ~4 GB or ~12 minutes each. Files are named sequentially: GOPR0001.MP4, GP010001.MP4, GP020001.MP4, etc. If one chapter is lost, the remaining chapters can be stitched together using FFmpeg's concat demuxer.
