Free SD Card Recovery Software: What to Compare Before Scanning

A free scan, a free preview, and free file recovery are different offers. Before choosing software for an SD card, establish whether the card is readable, whether you need original filenames, and how you will verify exported files. This is a comparison of documented capabilities and decision criteria, not a recovery-rate ranking or a claim of comparative testing.

Decide which result matters

For deleted photos, you may value original folders and filenames. For a damaged filesystem, usable image content may matter more than its original name. For camera video, a visible thumbnail may represent only a small intact portion of a larger fragmented recording.

Check what “free” actually permits

Before a long scan, look for the export limit, supported operating system, relevant file types, destination requirements, and whether the program can work from an image. Do not assume that a trial with unlimited scanning also permits unlimited saving.

If your critical files exceed a free allowance, identify a representative sample rather than filling the allowance with low-value temporary files. Use a safe sample workflow

  1. Stop taking new photos or writing to the card. Do not format it to make a scanner accept it.
  2. Confirm the correct card and its reported capacity. Prepare another physical storage device with room for exports.
  3. If a stable source image is already available, keep it unchanged and use a working copy where the tool supports that format.
  4. Scan the intended source. Keep file-system results and signature-based results distinguishable when reviewing them.
  5. Export a small selection of important file types to the destination.
  6. Open full-resolution photos and complete documents. Play video through the recording with audio; a thumbnail alone is insufficient.
