Photo restoration improves an existing image of an old print: fading, scratches, dust or an unwanted colour cast. File recovery addresses a different problem, where the photograph itself has been deleted or is missing from storage. First decide whether you need to retrieve a file or edit one you already have.
Begin with an untouched digital copy
Scan or photograph the original carefully and keep that capture unchanged. Work on a duplicate so that you can compare the restoration with the source and return to it if an automatic correction changes too much. A cleaner capture can reduce the amount of editing needed later.
For family archives, decide whether the goal is faithful preservation, a pleasing display copy or creative colourisation. These are different outcomes. Record substantial edits, especially generated facial details or added colour, so that an enhanced version is not confused with the original evidence.

A careful restoration workflow
- Preserve the original capture. Make a working copy and identify the damage you want to correct.
- Adjust overall brightness, contrast and colour conservatively. Avoid clipping away faint details in the lightest or darkest areas.
- Remove dust and scratches in small areas. Check that healing or cloning does not repeat textures unnaturally or erase a meaningful feature.
- Compare faces, lettering and patterned clothing with the original. AI-generated detail can look convincing without being historically accurate.
- Apply final sharpening only after reviewing the image at a useful viewing size. Keep an editable working version and export a separate sharing copy.
Free or paid: compare the workflow
Price alone does not determine restoration quality. A manual editor may suit a small number of photographs if you can spend time on local corrections. A guided or automated tool may reduce repetitive work, but still needs review. Check current terms, file compatibility and any online-processing requirement before committing an irreplaceable family archive to a workflow.
Test a faded picture, a scratched picture and a face with fine detail if your collection contains all three. Judge whether the results preserve the features you care about rather than simply appearing sharper.
Keep restoration separate from historical accuracy
Colourisation estimates colours that may not be known. Generative restoration can also invent texture or facial details. Keep a clearly labelled original alongside the enhanced version, and document what was changed when the image is used for family history or research.
Preserve the files after editing
Keep the untouched capture, the working file and the final export in an organised folder structure. Maintain more than one backup and periodically check that the files open. If the original digital photographs are missing, recover or retrieve them before editing; a storage recovery tool such as XRecovery does not itself remove scratches or restore faded print colours.
