SD Card Shows the Wrong Capacity: Safe Checks Before Recovery

When an SD card appears with the wrong capacity, do not format it just to see whether Windows corrects the number. A capacity mismatch can come from an adapter, a damaged partition table, counterfeit media, or a card that is beginning to fail. The safest next step depends on where the incorrect value appears.

First identify where the wrong capacity is reported

Windows can show capacity in several places. File Explorer reports the mounted volume, while Disk Management also shows the physical disk and its partition layout. Those values answer different questions.

Step 1: stop writes to the SD card

Do not take more photos, copy test files to the card, create a new partition, or accept a repair prompt. These actions can overwrite file-system records and reusable clusters. If the card contains irreplaceable files, place it aside until you have a stable reader and enough destination storage.

Step 2: rule out the reader and adapter

A microSD-to-SD adapter does not translate data, but damaged contacts or a loose fit can still cause intermittent detection. USB readers can also report a device incorrectly when their controller or cable is unstable.

  • Reconnect the card once using a known-good reader.
  • Try a different USB port directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • If practical, compare the result on another Windows computer.
  • Do not keep reconnecting a card that becomes unusually hot or repeatedly disconnects.

If another reader reports the expected physical size, the original reader was probably the problem. Continue recovery through the stable reader and save recovered files to another drive.

Step 3: compare File Explorer with Disk Management

Press Windows + X and open Disk Management. Identify the SD card by capacity and removable-media context; do not rely on a drive letter alone. Check whether Windows reports the expected physical disk size and whether space is allocated, unallocated, RAW, or split into multiple partitions.

If the physical disk size is correct, recovery software may still be able to scan sectors outside the currently mounted volume. If the physical size itself is incorrect, changing partitions will not fix the underlying reporting problem.

Step 4: decide whether to image before scanning

Create a sector-by-sector image first when the card disconnects, produces read errors, becomes slower during repeated reads, or contains high-value files. Imaging makes one controlled pass over the source and lets later recovery attempts work from a copy.

A card that remains stable and reports its full physical capacity may be scanned directly, but recover found files to a different disk. Never use the source card as the recovery destination.

Step 5: recognize counterfeit or failing media

Some counterfeit cards advertise more capacity than their flash memory actually provides. They may appear normal until data exceeds the real capacity, after which new files overwrite older areas or become corrupt. A destructive capacity test can confirm this, but it writes across the card and should only be performed after recovery and only when no needed data remains.

Unexpectedly changing capacity, repeated disconnects, read errors and extreme slowness can also indicate controller or NAND failure. Software cannot repair a controller that no longer exposes the correct storage.

  • Do not initialize the disk or create a new simple volume.
  • Do not run CHKDSK on the only copy of important data.

Stop DIY attempts when the card is physically cracked, corroded, unusually hot, intermittently detected, or reported as No Media in every known-good reader. The same applies when the files are legally, financially or personally irreplaceable and no second attempt can be tolerated.

Can formatting restore the full capacity?

Formatting may recreate a usable volume when the hardware reports the correct physical capacity, but it changes file-system structures and can reduce recovery options. Recover important data first.

Why does a 64 GB card show slightly less space?

A modest difference is normal because manufacturers use decimal units while Windows may display binary units. A much larger difference, zero bytes, or a suddenly changed capacity requires investigation.

Can CHKDSK fix the wrong capacity?
