How to Recover Deleted Files from an SSD

Deleted-file recovery from an SSD is time-sensitive because deletion can trigger TRIM. TRIM tells the SSD that certain logical blocks no longer contain needed data. The controller may erase those flash pages during background garbage collection, after which recovery software cannot reconstruct their previous bytes.

Stop using the affected SSD immediately. If it is the Windows system drive, shut the computer down rather than continuing to browse, download, install tools, or create files. Temporary files, updates, indexing, synchronization, and ordinary application activity can all generate writes.

Check copies before scanning

Start with locations that do not touch the lost data: Recycle Bin, File History, OneDrive or another cloud version history, application autosaves, email attachments, external backups, and copies held by collaborators. Restore any found copy to a different device.

If the file was deleted from a synchronized folder, pause synchronization from another device before an automated deletion propagates further. Preserve version history until the needed files are verified.

Understand what TRIM changes

The filename and folder entry may remain visible in old metadata even when the SSD no longer returns the file content. Conversely, signature scanning may find content without its original path or name. Neither result proves completeness.

TRIM behavior depends on the operating system, connection, controller, file system, and whether the command reached the drive. There is no reliable countdown. Avoid claims that a deleted SSD file is certainly recoverable or certainly gone based only on elapsed time.

Scan without writing to the source

Use another Windows installation or attach the SSD as a secondary device when practical. Install XRecovery 3.1.6 on a different disk. Confirm that Windows detects the affected SSD with a plausible capacity, then select the correct device or partition.

Start scanning by double-clicking the source or using the scan button. The quick phase runs first and the deep phase starts automatically afterward. Review file-system and signature-based results and preview representative files where the format is supported.

Recover selected files to a different physical device. XRecovery warns against choosing the scanned source as the destination, although a user can override the warning. Do not override it for a deleted-file case because the new writes can occupy the very blocks being searched.

The free allowance is 2 GB in total. XRecovery supports common photo, video, and document formats, not every possible format. If the SSD contains a supported Mac or Linux file system, XRecovery can scan it only when the disk is attached to a Windows machine and recognized by Windows.

Validate each important file

Do not judge recovery by filename, thumbnail, or file count alone. Open documents beyond the first page, extract archives, inspect full-resolution images, and play videos through several points with audio enabled. A partially recovered file may open while still containing damaged sections.

Preserve the original SSD until the recovered set has been reviewed and copied to another location. If the files are uniquely valuable and the first controlled scan does not find usable data, further routine scans are unlikely to reverse TRIM or overwrite. Escalate based on value and device condition rather than running repeated tools.

Cases that need a different guide

Use the failing-SSD workflow if the device disconnects, reports errors across unrelated areas, or changes capacity. Use the main SSD recovery guide when the volume is RAW, formatted, encrypted, or not mountable. Deleted-file recovery is appropriate only when Windows exposes a stable source and the primary event is deletion.

The safest sequence is: stop writes, check existing copies, assess TRIM and encryption, scan from another disk, recover elsewhere, and verify the exported files.
