Video recovery software should be judged by the footage it can actually save and play, not by the number of filenames in a scan. Stop recording to the affected card or drive, check existing copies, and keep a separate destination ready before trying a recovery tool.
Why a recovered video may not play
A video can span multiple storage regions. If file-system information is missing or parts of the recording have been overwritten, locating a file header may not recover the complete clip. An interrupted recording can also leave a file that needs repair rather than undeleting. Recovery, reconstruction and repair describe different tasks; none guarantees replacement of missing original data.

A practical XRecovery workflow
- Stop using the source and look for an earlier import, backup or second card copy. If the device repeatedly disconnects or shows physical failure symptoms, stop software attempts.
- Connect a stable source that Windows recognises. XRecovery 3.1.6 runs on Windows; do not assume that a camera connected through every transfer mode exposes its card as a scannable disk.
- For ordinary scanning, a quick scan is followed automatically by a deep scan. For camera footage, use the separate camera-enhancement entry when appropriate; it is not automatically included in the ordinary partition scan.
- Inspect available previews and save selected results to another physical device. Some mainstream video formats can be previewed, but preview support is not universal.
- Play the recovered clip from beginning to end. Check audio, duration, seeking and sections beyond the first frame. Keep failed and successful samples separate when comparing attempts.
Compare results before paying
Test the files that matter: a long clip, a short clip and footage from each relevant recording format where available. Record which application opens them and whether the full recording is present. A plausible file size or an opening thumbnail is only one clue.
Avoid comparing products through unsupported success percentages or old price tables. Current export limits, supported formats and the condition of your own source are more useful. A larger licence does not make overwritten data readable or repair a failing device.
Can permanently deleted videos still be recovered?
Sometimes, if sufficient original data remains readable. Deletion, overwriting and the storage device’s behaviour affect the result. Stop further writes, but do not treat that precaution as a recovery guarantee.
Is video repair the same as recovery?
No. Recovery tries to retrieve missing file data; repair works on a damaged file that is already available. If parts of the original recording are gone, a repaired or reconstructed result may still be incomplete. Preserve both the source and any exported copies while assessing the outcome.
