Recovery support has three separate layers: whether Windows recognizes the device, whether XRecovery can interpret the file system, and whether a lost file can be identified and previewed. Do not reduce these layers to a claim that every file can be recovered.
Device and file-system boundary
XRecovery 3.1.6 runs on Windows and scans disks, partitions, and external devices that Windows recognizes. It can scan supported Mac or Linux file systems when their disks are removed or attached as external media to a Windows machine. It does not run on macOS or Linux.
When file-system metadata survives, a quick or file-system scan can retain names, folders, timestamps, and allocation relationships. If that metadata is damaged, deep scanning can identify supported file structures by signatures and internal patterns. Signature results may not retain the original name or path, and fragmented files can remain incomplete.
File-type support
XRecovery supports common photo, video, and document formats. It does not support every possible format, codec, application database, proprietary container, or camera RAW variant. A precise public format list should be generated from the current product support matrix rather than copied from older marketing pages.
Preview support
Preview depends on both the format and the recovered content. Some supported files cannot be previewed inside the application. A preview may also test only part of a large or complex file. Lack of preview is not final proof that an export is unusable, while a visible thumbnail is not proof that the full file is intact.
Recover a representative sample to another physical device and validate it with the application that normally opens that format. Extract archives, inspect full-resolution images, read documents beyond the first page, and play videos through several points with audio.
Scan paths
Quick scan runs first and deep scan starts automatically afterward. Camera Enhancement runs automatically only through its enhancement entry and is not part of an ordinary partition scan. The media itself—such as an SD card—is still a normal source device.
Evidence and limits
Results depend on overwrite, TRIM, encryption, file fragmentation, damaged metadata, unreadable sectors, and device stability. XRecovery can skip timed-out bad regions and continue scanning, but it cannot reconstruct the bytes stored in those unreadable areas.
